The Fred Hollows Foundation

Fred Hollows Foundation

Inspired by the late Professor Fred Hollows (1929-1993), The Fred Hollows Foundation's vision is for a world where no one is needlessly blind, and Indigenous Australians enjoy the same health and life expectancy as other Australians.

In 1992, Fred and Gabi Hollows set up The Fred Hollows Foundation in Australia. The Foundation currently works in more than 20 countries worldwide.

Since Fred died, The Foundation has restored sight to well over one million people in the developing world. By forcing down the price of equipment and introducing modern surgical techniques, The Foundation has reduced the cost of cataract surgery to as little as $25 in some developing countries.

Brendon Hulcombe, CEO Jigsaw Training Academy, is a member of the Queensland Fundraising and Advisory Committee of The Foundation. Brendon was first drawn to The Foundation after seeing the ABC's Australian Story 16 years ago outlining Hollows' life and dedication to his work. Jigsaw Training Academy is proud to support this worthwhile cause. For more information on The Foundation or to see how you can add your support please visit www.hollows.org.au.

Kokoda Challenge

Kokoda Challenge

Jigsaw Training Academy is a proud supporter of a team of four women called WWAM (Women with a Mission) in the 2009 Kokoda Challenge. The Kokoda Challenge is a ‘cross country’ team event signifying the experience of Australian troops on the Kokoda track during World War II.  It is the ultimate team event, combining endurance and mateship, as teams of four trek 96kms in 39hours through the Gold Coast Hinterland region.

The event is a major fundraiser and in 2008 raised over $390,000 dollars for the KCYP (Kokoda Challenge Youth Program), an early intervention program for young people from all walks of life which encouranges them to learn the skills and values of discipline, tolerance, respect and self worth. Participants in the Youth Program culminate their 20 week training schedule by walking the actual Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.
